Let’s Hygge It Out!
The Danish Art of Being Cozy
As late October rolls around and winter months loom large, let’s face it, for some it can be depressing AF! Shorter days, colder nights, and less human interaction can all make winter almost unbearable ( seasonal affective disorder / “SAD” is real!). Now, truth be told, I’m someone who loves the change of seasons, and winter never seems to bum me out. Why not, you may ask? Well, let’s start with all the COATS and HATS and BOOTS, OH MY!
But for those who prefer to be homebodies in the winter, I have good news! It turns out there's hope in beating at least some of those winter blues: It’s called Hygge (pronounced “hue-gah”) — the Danish art of getting comfy and cozy during the colder months.
Hygge celebrates finding joy and relaxation in everyday moments at home — alone or with family and friends. Imagine reading a book in your sweats by the fireplace and sipping hot cocoa (or mulled wine as the Danes might do?) as you gaze out the window at snow falling gently on the trees…ahhhhh…. (OK big city dwellers and West coasters, just work with me here!)
Hygge life is one of the many reasons Scandinavian countries are dubbed the happiest in the world, despite their interminably long winter months. And Denmark, Sweden, and Norway are still at the top of my travel bucket list. As for more local Hygge, give me chunky blankets, plushy pillows, and scented candles a-plenty, and you’ve got one happy camper.
I’m also definitely what you might call a “Dane-o-phile” when it comes to interior design. So, naturally, I’m more than happy to share some feel-good ways to Hygge it out in the bedroom with style. But you’ll have to mull your own wine!
Godnat og drøm sødt!
(Goodnight and sweet dreams!)
