Get Your Guestroomzzz Ready
The Holidayzzz Are Coming!
Nine years ago, I bought my house in East Hampton, NY, in an amazing Springs/Amagansett North neighborhood called Barnes Landing. Barnes Landing sounds like a soap opera, I know. But the neighborhood is so special, brimming with kind, creative, and wonderful people. And our Barnes Hole bay beach, which we all can walk to, is a place for dogs to romp freely and for all of us to swim, relax, play, and go on long strolls. It’s an idyllic, rather understated part of The Hamptons that feels quite removed from the overly fancified reputation many people think of when they think of Hamptonian life. I find the time to remind myself to have gratitude for my home and my neighborhood every single day.
At my house, most guests get in their beds and stay in there as long as possible, and that signaled to me that maybe I’m on to something… My dear friend Carrie even renamed my house THE SLEEP CLINIC long ago, because she would disappear into the guest room at bedtime and emerge 10 hours later a whole new human.
And while I’m an expert in the science of hosting, becoming a homeowner did not feel like something that was naturally in my DNA. The styling and design part, yes…that tracked and felt like fun; but the actual homeownership part including renovations, pipes bursting, wasps nests? #NOPE, not pour moi. I grew up in a NYC apartment, wasn’t sure I had the know-how or mental tools for a house…and being in one at night always used to scare the bejesus out of me. Eventually, I found my way, and I’ve come to embrace everything about this experience: the joy, the pride, even the homeowner headaches.
More than anything else though, it’s the pure elation that comes with filling my home with people I love. Oh, and if anyone needs me to come over and adjust your hot water heater’s temperature or take a look at your irrigation timer, I’m your girl. This is the new me.
Thanksgiving is around the corner, and as the holiday season rolls around, you might be stressing out about how to deal with guests. Whether you live in a house or an apartment, big or small, you’re probably thinking about how to make space — and if you’re like me, how to make them feel at home and get an amazing night’s sleep.
So, here are a few guest room ideazzz, from cozy slippers, to bedside H2O and pillow spray, to the coziest blanket imaginable for your couch surfers. I’ve got you and yours covered!
Bedfully Yours,
Sharon xx
