MY BEDTIME STORY: Welcome To The Green
Have you ever been completely smitten by a color?
A couple of months ago, Bedfully co-founder Chelsa Yin and I visited a fabulous, understatedly elegant wellness spa in upstate NY called Hemlock Neversink . We hiked with goats, ate delicious and nutritious meals, learned Tai Chi, practiced yoga, and decompressed all around. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s an easy drive from NYC and the place is very chill. It's understated, not fancy — but chic and very thoughtfully “considered” — as my interior designer friend Brad Ford might say.
One of the first things I noticed when I arrived was that all the buildings were painted a light, rather powdery olive green. Then I checked into my room and immediately became transfixed on yet another green paint color: a dark olive-mossy-brown, which carried over into a bathroom of the same color, in gorgeous Moroccan tiles.
Being immersed in 240 acres of green at Hemlock — both indoors and out — got me thinking about how this powerful color connotes so many different states of mind. You are “green with envy” and yet “the grass is always greener.” You look “green around the gills” but you always hope to be “given the green light.” And then of course there’s the fan favorite of all American parents: “What in God’s green earth is going on around here?” It’s funny how green has found its way so steadily into our daily vernacular.

Chelsa and I sat together in her room later that day — obsessing and Googling the s**t out of paint colors to find a match to those glorious walls. And indeed we did, so close in fact, that it may be the very one: Cardamom by Farrow & Ball . I haven’t stopped thinking about it (nor talking about it), so I figured I may as well write about it.

Turns out, when it comes to sleep, green is one of the best hues for alleviating anxiety and creating a sense of calm and relaxation. According to a fascinating piece I found titled The Color Green History and Symbolism , “green represents positive emotions, such as joy, peace and harmony.

Many psychologists believe the color green promotes stress reduction.” With these fun factoids in mind, I used these green eyes of mine to seek out some great green bedroom ideazzz. So, my dear readers, get ready to lay down some green, ya know what I mean? I’m giving you the green light.
Bedfully Yours,
