Harbour Island, The Bahamas
Sleeping Around
I don't know about you, but I've spent more than a few winter nights lying awake, staring at the ceiling and counting the days until my annual spring vacation. I'm lucky enough to have a group of friends I've been vacationing with for about eight years; and they introduced me to this magical little gem: Harbour Island in the Bahamas, affectionately known to locals and repeat visitors alike as "Briland." Trust me, this tiny speck on the world map is exactly what you didn't know you needed in your life.
I just returned from my annual week there, and as always, I'm reminded why I keep coming back — aside from my friends' wonderfully generous and unwavering invitation to join them, of course.
On Briland, the only thing demanding your attention is a pink sand beach that looks like it was art-directed by you in one of your dreams. Yes, the sand is actually pink. The shoreline is so impossibly rosy and soft that your feet will wonder why you ever keep them trapped in shoes. And I say that as someone who takes her footwear seriously. Your days can be spent lifting your eyes from the pages of a book to stare at crystal-clear water, or simply getting in to wade and drift through it. You can rent boats and be taken around the island to swim with turtles and pigs…creatures that live there unbothered and celebrated, which is exactly the energy we could all use more of. The Bahamian people are among the kindest and most hospitable I've ever encountered. Imagine strolling through Dunmore Town, the island's teeny center, and constantly being greeted by total strangers with a warm "Good day."
The nights on Harbour Island work a different kind of magic. There are no sprawling resort noise machines here, just the occasional golf cart puttering by, which is the primary mode of transport. The sunsets are impossibly epic, and when the sky finally darkens, it becomes so star-drenched that it barely feels real. I can genuinely feel my nervous system exhale when I'm there. We had strong winds on this trip, but they never felt disruptive; more like the kind of breeze that makes crashing into a long afternoon nap feel not just acceptable, but necessary. Each year, I can count on my room and its crisp cotton sheets carrying the faint scent of sea salt. You will sleep deeply on Briland. So deeply, in fact, that you may find yourself questioning your entire mattress situation back home. Some mornings, I've woken up and briefly forgotten where I was; which, after all, is rather the whole point of a vacation, is it not?
A fair warning before we get to recommendations: Harbour Island isn't cheap. Prepare to splurge on meals and drinks when you head out, whether you're staying in one of the island's wonderful boutique hotels or renting a private home. If it's the latter, plan to cook in a few nights. Your wallet will thank you.
