10 Black-Owned Businesses to Support While You Sleep
From bedding to home decor to wellness, there are countless Black-owned businesses on the market that you can support now and in the future. Not to mention, when you make purchases from brands owned by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), you are helping communities, amplifying their stories, celebrating diverse cultures, and making a statement about your values.
Here, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite brands and products founded by talented Black business owners who are dedicated to improving sleep experience and overall mental health.
Jungalow
Justina Blakeney, who is of African American, Native American, and Eastern European Jewish descent, is the mastermind behind Jungalow, the online shop for all things bohemian decor. In addition to being committed to donating to organizations such as ACLU and Black Lives Matter, the company plants at least two trees for every product sold. We’ve been obsessing over their colorful and leafy wallpapers, and most recently, their super affordable collaboration with Target.
Goodee
Founded by the same owners of the beloved brand WANT Les Essentiels, Goodee is a curated marketplace that offers essential homewares and lifestyle products for better living. We also love how a portion of proceeds from purchases go towards disenfranchised groups. One of our favorite items featured on the site? This 100 percent kapok mattress founded by Guinea-based brand Tensira. It’s lightweight, ultra-comfy, and makes for exceptional lounging and napping.
Johanna Howard
We think of this Swedish-based designer as the Queen of Cozy with an incredible offering of throws and bed coverings. Our top pick? This eye-catching Apex Throw is made of luxurious cotton and chenille.
Clare Paint
If you’re looking to change up the color scheme in your bedroom, look no further than interior designer Nicole Gibbons’s business. These water-based paints are VOC certified to ensure your indoor air quality is pollutant-free.
Linoto
We here at Bedfully love sleeping on linen sheets all year round because the fabric is air-permeable and heat-conducting, meaning it keeps us warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We recommend checking out Jason Evege’s Linoto line—the sheet sets are unbelievably soft and come in a range of sizes and over 20 colors.
Bolé Road Textiles
Interior designer Hana Getachew started this home decor company as an homage to her love for handwoven Ethiopian fabrics. The brand offers vibrant pieces perfect for any bedroom, like this cozy graphic Bale Pillow.
Ruffled Thread
If you’re a textiles addict like we are, meet your match! This Black-owned business sells stylish pillow covers galore, making it easy to change up the look of your bed regularly. The brand also offers vintage rugs, blankets and throws, and other home decor pieces.
Create the Culture
Speaking of pillow covers, check out these Malcom X Embroidered Pillow Brooklyn-based Krystal Collins’ unique shop sells DIY embroidery kits so you can adorn whatever you want, from quilts to pillows to PJs, with love.
Fenty
Talk about shining bright like a diamond! After launching her Fenty Beauty line in 2017, Rihanna outdid herself with a game-changing skincare line that also celebrates inclusivity and diversity. The Butta Drop Whipped Oil Body Cream is loaded with tropical oils, butters, and extracts that melt into your skin, leaving it deeply hydrated and glowing.
Harlem Candle Company
By now you’ll know how much we love inhaling scents before bed, so we’ll get any chance we can to promote our favorite deliciously smelling products. Inspired by New York City’s Harlem, you’ll find candles named after well-known streets in the neighborhood. This Dream Luxury Candle features notes of lavender, bergamot, jasmine, and sandalwood—just some of the many scents that will leave you feeling calm before bedtime.
